First Run In Singapore

Hello from Singapore! After an awesome 10 days in Melbourne that ended all too soon, the Ninja Turtle is finally “home”. Home is used loosely here, for it has now officially been 10 years since the Ninja Turtle moved away. A lot has changed in Singapore in the last ten years, and as other expatriates may relate, one feels more and more like a tourist with each subsequent homecoming.

What was once familiar, is now the foreign. Memories become fuzzy, or developments happen and memories become useless in certain situations. Being lost in your hometown is a disorienting and slightly embarrassing experience.

Like so. The Ninja Turtle got hopelessly lost after taking a wrong turn, although she knew that she wasn't all that far away, it still wasn't near enough.

To be fair, she was simply following the directions given to her from the passers-by she had stopped. Looks like they were none the wiser themselves.

Running in Singapore is a challenge. Running in Singapore after having taken 11 days off running is almost a form of self-punishment. Running 10 miles in Singapore after having taken 11 days off running is almost asking for trouble. Armed with only one 600ml water bottle, trudging along and discovering that there are no water fountains in the park or the park connectors… well, let’s just say there were certainly better times than 4.30pm in the afternoon to indulge this running madness.

The various perils faced by the Ninja Turtle on her first run back home:

#4: Oh yes, as if running without water, unintentionally adding distance to a hot and humid run wasn't enough to contend with, one's gotta watch out for those falling branches. Never know when one of those darn trees will succumb to a flash of lightning, you know.

All the same, it was a real pleasure to finally bring these shuffling feet back to home soil (even for someone who’s not big on patriotism). It’ll probably take a while to acclimatize, but the Ninja Turtle has the next whole month to do so. Can’t wait to explore more running routes!

  1. Ten miles in Singapore humidity with no acclimatisation is a commendable effort. I always dread training during my visits back home.. Seeing the steam rising off the plants in macrtiche reservoir lark and losing several litres of body fluid to sweat is just a turnoff!

    • Thank you for acknowledging the effort of running in 98% humidity. It really kills!
      I did a 22.5km long run last Sunday, and was literally dragging myself back at the end. Added a whopping 25 minutes to my usual time for that distance (and it’s not like I do this distance often).
      I’ve read countless times that we have to adjust for heat and humidity, but never really knew it would be this bad.
