After being awake for 20 solid hours yesterday, the Ninja Turtle did not want to wake up this morning. She would have happily stayed in the comfortable bed, except a solid stream of sunshine punched through the curtains, insisting she that she get up and get going.
So the day commenced with breakfast on the balcony, where the sun was so hot, the duo sat in their T-shirts and shorts while watching passersby on the street below wrapped in scarves and coats. They fixed themselves a quick breakfast of coffee, fresh fruit and almond-orange biscotti hastily made by the Ninja Turtle the day before they left Metz.
It was lovely outside, with plenty of sunshine. The Promenade des Anglais by day was just as beautiful as it was by night.
and the most interesting sights on the Promenade itself.
The rest of the day was spent simply wandering around.
The Ninja Turtle grabbed the chance to buy some herbes de Provence at the Marché aux Fleurs, while GodzillaPin wandered around, stuffing his face with free samples of pesto and anything else he could find.
Then, they decided to pop by the Parc de la Colline du Château.
Now, there is an elevator for visitors who have restricted mobility, and up the top, there are wheelchair ramps and all, but for those who are capable of climbing, do it. If there is just one good reason to do it, it’s for the view. Sure, you can ride up and walk down, but there is something magical about going higher and higher, while progressively seeing farther and farther. The experience can only have as much meaning as you choose to put into it, but GP and the Turtle thought it was pretty magical to do it that way.
Also, by the time they reached the top, they’ve worked up quite an appetite. So down they went, using the elevator, and wandered back to Vieux Nice (the old town). They found a very chic little eatery called Ark, which had a balcony that looks out to the sea but the wind and traffic noise drove them downstairs, where hidden behind a glass panel, they were comfortably installed on couches under the Mediterranean sun, and proceeded to polish off 2/3 of a bottle of wine between them. For 19€, they also got a set menu lunch that included entrée, main and a coffee. GodzillaPin took grilled capsicums and sauté octopus, while the Turtle chose a Caesar salad and duck parmentier.
There is no need to provide a list of reasons to visit Nice, considering how many tourists come here, but there is a very good reason to visit at the moment. Tonight kicks off the opening ceremony of Carnaval de Nice 2014, which explains all the street closures, grandstands and murals that are impossible to miss. Of course, the duo knew about Carnaval before arriving – it was the only reason why the Ninja Turtle was willing to come to Nice for a second time in 2 years.
The Carnaval will commence only in 2 hours’ time, so the duo will wrap it up here for now and write about it later. For now, they’re ready to hit the streets and party ‘cos it’s Friday night!
